Why is it important to pay attention to the home environment?
The image above shows the home environment as more than just the home. That is bcause, as you know, many factors outside of the home influence what happens inside the home. Therefore, as the African proverb states, it takes a village to raise a child. Some say, "I don't see any village buying food and clothes for my child!" Perhaps not, but, as this Chinese proverb states, a child's life is like a piece of paper on which every passerby leaves a mark.
Every person in your child's life has an impact.

Observing who and what are in the home
Who and what are in your home affects your child
As you start this journey, pay attention to the influence that family members, friends and relatives have on your child. Their values and relationships are likely to affect your child in one way or another. Children hear and see much more than we think. Consider the language used, the attitudes and opinions that are shared, and how they are shared. You are probably already paying attention to what is in your home. As you do, ask: Do the pictures, books, and music reflect positive images of Black people? Do I have a place for my child to do homework? Is my child eating healthy food and drinking enough water? How is my home supporting my child'shealth and well-being. |
